After a day of panic attacks and depression over a flunked final, I watched The Pianist — Polanski’s film about a famous Polish Jew piano player who survives German occupation/Holocaust during WWdos. I was on target of my assumption that it would be a depressing movie, but the best way to describe it is “optimistically depressing”. Since Szpilman survived, having to deal with some of the biggest pricks of all time, it makes me feel glad that I don’t have to worry about getting the shit beat out of me or just shot in the street because I happen to look Jewish.
The holocaust itself — and I believe it was portrayed very well in the film — is so horrific and ridiculous, you have to wonder why did all of those Nazi fuckheads go along with Herr Hitler’s great idea? Did they ever stop and think that off’ing Jews and other ordinary people in record numbers was the least bit….evil? I guess it just goes to show that an entire nation of people is capable of being brainwashed.
Did Adrien Brody deserve the Best Actor Oscar? That’s questionable. Did Roman “American Fugitive” Polanski deserve Best Director? I’d say so. He definitely made a very powerful film which recreates Warsaw during the war and portrays the good and evil in all parties involved. And it’s probably the best use of sound I’ve seen in a film recently.
So there is my props to that dirty old man Polanski.
