Dan and I headed up to The Bronx today to check out the Bronx Zoo. After about a 30 minute subway ride, we arrived to the charming yet I-don’t-want-to-be-here-late-at-night neighborhood surrounding the zoo. A couple of blocks and we were inside the park.
The zoo has an impressive collection and is large in size, although the maps are misleading and make it appear to be larger than it really is. We were able to see tree kangaroos, grizzly bears, giraffes, camels and more than enough monkeys. We examined some more unusual animals like bats, big tree rats, millipedes and various insects.

But the highlight of the show was watching a couple of tigers go at it. At first, we thought the roaring was sound effects coming from some hidden speakers but when we came up on them, we realized the roaring was authentic. It appeared that one of the tigers was either in the mood to play or assert his dominance…and the other one wasn’t. They eventually calmed down and went about their business.
And all I have to show for it is a blurry photo. Curses!
I can’t help but think that the amount of human traffic led to them getting stressed out, thereby irritating the situation. There’s always a couple of exhibits that I find depressing - the tigers, maybe. Definitely the polar bear - all he wanted was to go inside and get some AC. Perhaps polar bears are better left closer to the poles?
I was just listening to Thom Yorke - Black Swan
