10 Years

we wanted to rock and roll all night and party every day

10 years ago to the day, I was enjoying my senior year at Brazosport High School with some crazy kids who wanted to rock and roll all night and party every day.

Happy Halloween!

Gerald and Karen DeGroot

This couple, graduates of University of Michigan, founded the DHARMA Initiative in 1970 so says the Lostpedia. Turns out, they make for an effective Halloween costume applying the patches via Ebay to your everyday lab coats and medic smocks. Brandi and I took on those characters for the festivities this weekend and had an overwhelming amount of feedback. Clearly if you watch Lost, you’re really into Lost.

Cheers to the Methadone Fright Fest hosts, it was a doozy.

Google Rank Update

After this website was removed from Google’s “kevin barnett” query for some unknown and very suspicious reason(s), I was able to get it back. I’m now the #1 result, beating the volleyball player, actor, professor and lawyer - i.e. not nearly as interesting, charming and good looking - Kevin Barnett’s.

I think registering the site with Google’s webmaster tools may have done the trick. Thanks to all of you who link to my website for keeping my URL updated.

Game 7

For me, it will be remembering Endy Chavez’ HR rob/double play in the 6th.

I hope the ‘Cards can make a series out of it with Detroit and win it for the National League.
But until then, the St. Louis Cardinals can suck it.

Houston Live Music: Third Dominion of Hell

Sounds like one of Houston’s “finest” confused the year for 1967, the city for New Haven and the band for The Doors. Some beat cop busted into a club and put the smackdown on the extremely harmless indie-rock band, Two Gallants for reasons unclear. Brute force was used first but at least the cop had the decency to use his tazer instead of his gun when he couldn’t control the situation.

It might have been over a noise violation but the proper, legal procedure would have been to take it up with the venue management who hired the band to play there that evening.

I hope this doesn’t reinforce the stereotype that police officers - specifically in the Houston area - are mental rejects who get off on power tripping over a bunch of kids listening to some rock music. Because it’s just not true…

Goldfrapp @ The Roseland Ballroom

First off, I’m not really going to talk about the opener Ratatat because they didn’t actually perform. What they did do was a pretty amateur DJ set using their iPods. It might have been interesting at a house party but come on - anybody can play tunes off of The Chronic.

Goldfrapp was amazing and it was great to see them play a slightly different set after having seen them at SXSW this year. They started the show playing some songs off of Felt Mountain that I wasn’t too familiar with but really showcased Allison Goldfrapp’s voice. Her singing on Utopia reminded me of The Diva from The Fifth Element, hitting some crazy highs and lows.

The biggest change would probably be the four dancers on stage, coming out for almost every other song starting with Train. Their moves were choreographed and the costumes were well designed and obviously appropriate for each song. For example, they wore large horse heads, dressed all in white and had horse manes attached to their backsides for Ride A White Horse. That particular performance, extended and very well choreographed was the highlight of the show.

The band was really tight and everyone hit the songs well but I would have to take acception with the vocals on Fly Me Away. The vocals were a tad sour but to their credit, it appeared they were having technical issues with their in-ear monitors. The issue appeared to be rectified shortly after that song.

The crowd was an interesting cross section of discoheads, hipsters, gay men and women. Moby was into the groove up in the VIP balcony. This is Goldfrapp’s last performance of the year and judging from their tour efforts this year - it might be the last one in the US for a while…
