Are There Bear To Shoot In Texas? »

Midtacular

Most of the time I tend to keep the blog free of politics because, quite frankly, there are more than enough political blogs on the world wide web. However, I find it interesting to document the political air that I’m breathing for later reflection. Here we go…

Andrew Sullivan is my favorite political blogger at the moment. He is a self-proclaimed conservative yet extremely critical of the current Republican party, or at least those in charge of the Republican party. I was too young to follow politics during the Ronald Reagan years, yet I understand that Republicans embraced ideals such as limited government, fiscal responsibility, human rights and smart foreign policy. What happened? Perhaps the pendulum is starting to swing the other way after our overreactions to 9/11.

Lou Dobbs, a conservative CNN correspondent, is also in the minority of television pundits-who-make-sense. He’s tough on immigration policies but he calls out our politicians at writing checks they can’t cash in terms of border control. He acknowledges that our government is corrupt, drunk with power. And like duping the Religious Right into thinking that they’ll actually get their way on “nanny-state” policies, they’re duping Americans concerned about border security and allowing millions of people to enter the country illegally. It’s a lot of winking while distracting from the handouts to corporate interests. Sad but true.

I love following American politics but it’s enough these days to drive me crazy. That’s where Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert come in. Their brilliant satire and commentary allows for laughter at the absurd and a deflation to ideology. Yet I send in request after request for tickets and never hear anything. I’ll keep on watching.

Less than a week away from the mid-term elections, here’s to hoping for a good turnout. I understand most of the choices are between a chump and a knob but clearly the status-quo is focused on power and greed. Perhaps American’s will send a message that they cannot keep writing blank checks out to themselves.

I was just listening to The Bravery - Honest Mistake
