I happened across this post written four years ago in which I took an online quiz to see how gay I was. Just now, I retook the quiz wondering if anything has changed. Guess not:

Yes, congratulations to me on being a happy, well adjusted hetero man. According to the meter, I am neither too straight or too gay. I feel like dancing.

The first weekend of warm weather hit New York and everyone came outside to play. The first stop was at Shea Stadium to watch the Mets vs. Braves. Although the Saturday game was a 7-2 win, Mets lost Friday and Sunday thanks to big home runs by Chipper Jones and Kelly Johnson, respectively. It looks like these two teams will be battling it out for the rest of the season for the NL East.
One thing different about watching The Mets this year: the construction on the new Shea Stadium CitiField does not go un-noticed beyond the outfield. Let’s “enjoy” those Shea seats while we still can…
From Shea it was a hop, skip and a jump from the 7, to the N/R over to Astoria. We waited 45 minutes to get into the Bohemian/Astoria Beer Garden - the last of it’s kind in the city. Our crew managed to knock out several pitchers of good beer and soak up the last bit of sun for the day. Drinking in public, in that large of a space is certainly a treat from having been couped up in Manhattan bars all winter long.
This weekend was difficult to get around the city on foot since everyone else had the same idea. Streets were crowded with pedestrians as if it was rush hour. Most places serving ice cream, cold beverages, etc were swarmed with people. Shake Shack in Madison Square Park had a 45-60min line that I didn’t bother to get involved with.
The warm season has arrived and I will enjoy it for a while but I know inevitably it will get a lot warmer (and stinky/filthy) in the city as summer kicks into high gear. Here’s to hoping for a mild summer.

A friend of a friend is on a mission to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by pledging to swimbikerun not just a triathalon but a half IronMan. That’s a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike-ride and 13 mile run. Nicole probably thinks it’s good physical fitness but I think it’s a little crazy.
Nicole is also holding a silent auction with some fabulous prizes to help raise money, the proceeds of which will all go to the LLS. Just a few of the top ticket items include:
- 2 tickets to a Saturday Night Live of your choice (season finale not available).
- The Colbert Experience: A meet and greet with Mr. Colbert, tour of the studio and tickets to a taping.
- A voicemail greeting (of your choice) performed by Triumph The Insult Comic Dog (seriously)
I highly recommend bidding early and often…
*Update: The silent auction was a success. Over $1500 was raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. And some lucky high-bidder has a date with Mr. Colbert…

A friend tells me about Rodrigo Y Gabriela playing Webster Hall a couple of days ago and that it was a bad move to miss it. I didn’t know who they were but all that needs to be said is this YouTube of them bringing it home with Stairway to Heaven.
It’s unusual to see musicians actually add something to this song and make it their own. Also fascinating, is Gabriela’s master technique. Her guitar playing reminds me of how Victor Wooten approaches the bass with the strum down/up thumb maneuver and tapping. Solid performance. I’m looking forward to their next visit through New York.
Food and travel writer Anthony Bourdain unleashes another brilliant critique on The Food Network, discussing their “Award show” which aired this past Sunday night. Billboards next to my office (which I share with Food Network) have been hyping up this program for weeks. I could only stand to watch the show for 5 minutes.
Money quote:
The overmuscled fuckwit from DINNER SLIGHTLY DIFFICULT delivered the best line: something like “This is the greatest night “ever!” If that was his greatest night ever, I suspect he would say the same thing while being publicly butt-slammed by the San Diego Chicken.
