Gondry’s Declare Independence

This is the seventh video that Michel Gondry has directed for Bjork. Like the others, this one is strangely brilliant.

Tin Man

In a word; shitty. Not withholding the reverence I have for The Wizard of Oz, but this mini-series was just bad. The dialog was in the league of George Lucas but probably worse. The CG effects looked like they were done in film school. The acting was, okay. But the story overwhelmed it’s few gems with utter failures. The wrong parts were drawn out and the right parts were cut short or skipped over. Alan Cumming looked bad even though he was good. They made the one black guy Toto. Even Zooey Deschanel was a bore.

One of the only compliments I could pay is to Kathleen Robertson who is now and may have always been the better looking Beverly Hills 90210 cast member. That said, the winged monkeys flying off her supple breasts still managed to get old after the 8th or 9th time they used this effect.

Sci-Fi might have done well by Battlestar Galatica but this kind of swill is going to take them down. And this was written before the writer’s strike.

However, I am willing to believe that the writers might have had a better story than what was actually made. That is, unless the “eclipse of doom” was just deus ex machina instead of a subtle nod to Dark Side of the Moon.

The Trailer for Speed Racer

must be viewed in HD with Quicktime. The infinite depth of field and CG compositing give it a real-world-video-game-world feel, if that makes any sense. I wrote about this film in August so the anticipation is building appropriately for a May 2008 release.

For the Record

It’s not me in Scott Meyer’s How To Fake A Smile, although it does look like me, especially in this frame. Also, I’d never use someone’s skin for a poncho, unless of course it rubs the lotion on its skin….it does this whenever it is told.

Ruhlman vs Bourdain

I had to stop by the Union Square Barnes & Noble on my way home from work last night to catch a discussion between Michael Ruhlman and Anthony Bourdain. I’m a long time fan of Bourdain, specifically of Kitchen Confidential, his subsequent travel shows and rants about The Food Network and their personalities. I had been reading Ruhlman’s blog every now and then to catch Bourdain’s guest appearances until I started watching The Next Iron Chef, for which Ruhlman was a judge and commentator via his blog.

The introduction was a tad heavy on the fluffing but the two authors kept it real on travel, cooking and producing good television around those topics. They also had some funny and interesting comments on the celebrity chef. BN.com will have at some point has a video of the discussion.

Bourdain: Guy Fieri, you know…20% more gel…20% more Rastafari…can we put him on a skateboard…with the glasses around his head: ratings gold.

Ruhlman: Apparently, he’s very popular. I don’t know…

Bourdain: So is chlamydia.

Ruhlman: Did you really quit smoking?

Bourdain: Yes.

Bourdain: That’s what a pair of 7 1/2 month old lungs in the house does to you.

Ruhlman: You have some redeeming characteristics after all.

Bourdain: Shut the fuck up.
