Google Rank Update

After this website was removed from Google’s “kevin barnett” query for some unknown and very suspicious reason(s), I was able to get it back. I’m now the #1 result, beating the volleyball player, actor, professor and lawyer - i.e. not nearly as interesting, charming and good looking - Kevin Barnett’s.

I think registering the site with Google’s webmaster tools may have done the trick. Thanks to all of you who link to my website for keeping my URL updated.

Masks

I am attempting to continue a short-lived tradition of making this website a bit creepier during the month of October. My original idea was to feature diagrams of Halloween masks from US Patents - and I took a pass at it and overdid it - still need to work on it. The noose will suffice for today…it’s appropriate.

As I was looking for said mask diagrams, I came across this webpage on the USPTO’s website - as in the federal government.

I doubt that page has been touched in 10-12 years. If it has, that’s really scary.

New City, New Domain, New Blog

After several weeks (months) of hiatus status on welshcrew.com/kevin, I have successfully completed a few transitions. I am living in a great apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and working for MLB.com at the glorious Chelsea Market. More on that to come…

In early June, I procured the domain name “kevinbarnett.com” after several months (years) of waiting. Thankfully the competition was light and that Olympic volleyball player didn’t bite. My objective now is to be the #1 result on google for “Kevin Barnett”. The volleyball player is going down like Chinatown, mark my words.

(note, I’m not going to link to any of his websites. This is war.)

Finally, after several weeks (millenia) of design and development time, I have re-launched my blog on the Wordpress platform at the advice of Cravey and Zeldman. I had been looking for a more powerful blog machine having exhausted the possibilities of Blogger. That’s behind the scenes, however and perhaps the most dramatic change is the design itself. I chose to go minimalist because I didn’t feel that I could execute a stylish design I would be happy with on this go-round.

Settling for second-best may have been the better choice, because I’m enjoying the lightweight-ness of it all and the possibility for options. I’d say the blog better reflects my life right now anyway: all facets of my life have been changed in a manner of weeks; my career is now focused on the technical vs. the design; as a resident of New York City, I am forced to “cut the fat” of my belongings and materialism and live as minimal as possible.

I have to play catch-up on some posts but I’m betting that I won’t have to cheat for a while now that I am free and clear of development on ye ol’ blog.

sIFR = No Go

I am going to have to pass on pretty, anti-aliased, tricked-out, rendered in Macromedia Flash headings until the transparent background feature doesn’t render as green in Safari (Mac OS X comes first around here) - or until I redesign my blog to have a solid color background (hmm, don’t see that happening).

But I have mastered sIFR (and by mastered, I mean somehow got it to work) for another project which will be launching soon. So sIFR is nice, when it makes sense to use it.

Right now, it’s not making sense for ye ol’ blog. Still, I might have a use for it for another project I have in the works.

It’s called a photoblog. And it’s going to be very anti-climatic.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

This is my first post on welshcrew.com/kevin v.3.0 and it feels fantastic. I can now start writing posts again - rather, I can’t keep using the excuse “I’m redesigning” to prevent me from posting.

It’s a shame because I haven’t written about the cool and uncool things that have been happening in my life. In the past, I’ve cheated and written posts after the fact. Well I’m taking on a new attitude for the blog which is reflective of my attitude towards life right now and that is keep moving forward.

I’m very proud of this new design. I’ve been working on Photoshop comps off and on for a few months. Yesterday, I was given the proper motivation (equal parts support from Devin and disrespect from a potential employer) and flushed this out in 24 hours. It also stands as a benchmark of my knowledge in both CSS/Web Standards and designing for the Web.

The weathered, worn look of it is definitely nothing unique or original. The design is a reflection of recent influences as well as current taste. I’ve been inspired over the past several months by some wonderful websites which I will name right here:

jasonsantamaria.com
whatdoiknow.org
gapersblock.com
zeldman.com

Finally, I want to thank Devin for her love and support and reminding me why my blog is cool.
